Less than a year after TON, a two-hour-and-a-half glitch mammoth that made it into Igloo’s Best of 2024 round-up, Özcan Saraç is back on Evel with Neural Generators of the Auditory Brainstem Response—and if TON already seemed daunting for its lengths and experimentation, Saraç’s seventh album ups the ante, clocking over 330 minutes divided into twenty-five movements.
At times, the sound feels almost mechanical—like a dishwasher trying to interpret a broken InSinkErator’s message—as grinding microscopic clicks and bleeps collide within their own labyrinth before retreating into four states of shattered stillness.
An eerie, hypnotic atmosphere permeates Soplo, with its ambivalent, wandering melodies, flowing synth patterns, unpredictable experiments, and manipulations, all complemented by processed field recordings.
Defined by an intricate layering of instruments, particularly within the classical music realm, which are then transformed and reshaped through the use of vintage electronic devices, adding a unique depth and texture to the acoustic arrangements.

The emotional resonances of this album would seem to be marred by writing a review that cannot, by its very nature, encompass the fluxing changes of musical flow and depth captured on 13. Just listen to it and be swept into a world that’s always changing, fates of people and nations rising and falling. This is something we should be unconcerned about, and instead offer our trust, care and love back to the world.
missing scenes explores a love of nature, darkness, light, and the importance of memory, sleep, and dreaming. The rich tapestry of Kurosawa’s Dreams is mirrored in dream or memory’s? sonic vignettes, bringing together memories of the peach orchard, the kitsune wedding, the watermill village, and Van Gogh’s crows.
After collaborating on the live renditions of Maselli’s galvanic Lazzaro (Opal Tapes, 2021), Domiziano Maselli and Tommaso Rolando team up again on the cryptically titled Enjoy Country Music, out on cassette and digital on Torto Editions (Rolando’s own label).
