The release of Trippin’ Variations via A Person Disguised as People is further evidence of Gray’s growing profile with a variety of tweakings to the original track from FC Commitments, Soft Operator, James Scott, SXXN, Stan K, Hidden Rivers, and Drummachinemike.
Further evidence of Gray’s growing profile
Trippin’ Variations is a collection of remixes crafted by ambient/electronic fellow-travelers of Zachary Gray round the corner and across the globe of the primary track on 2-track taster from late last year, Trippin’ / In Arrears.
Previously on igloomag the Newfoundland-based producer’s “Trippin’” was said to be ‘a doleful brooder, replete with melodic synth lines recalling early 90s Warp luminaries (cf. Black Dog, Plaid), layers of rhythm and harmony making for an uneasy introspective tenor’ (igloo’view). Further commended for ‘a deft touch in blending electronic production detail and filmic affect,’ Gray’s evolution is apparent from a back catalog (see here) steadily building over the years with a succession of releases incl. Suburbia EP, (igloo’view), Under a Red Sky (Synesthesia Media, 2020), Plan B (APDAP, 2020), Hustle Movement (APDAP, 2017), Night Hustle (APDAP, 2016), Containment (APDAP, 2015), etc. plus collusions with notable peers like Benoît Pioulard, Montag, and Sea Oleena.
