Amplitude Modulation is a proper shot of life into the 160+ breaks underground, and a reminder that the old jungle spirit still has room to mutate, surprise and absolutely batter any dancefloor outside the box enough to desire authentic experimentation.

Top-tier, non-derivative, introspective, forward-facing funk
Pinecone Moonshine drops the compilation set Amplitude Modulation, a collection of far more stimulating drum and bass-adjacent pieces that gives a guy like me hope that all is not lost in the 160+ breaks department. Echoes of Roni Size and the Bristol days ring in my opened ears, where cut-up samples, vocal treatments and delectable breaks dally with taut drum chops and Amen breaks slathered in a balsamic brutality to honestly die for.
The synth work across these artists is exceptional, too, where fat woob basses and spacetime colour splashes collide, where melody becomes symphony. Tracks roll, rise and fall, and real-world sounds merge with the digital. The atmospheres are ecstatic and warm. Tracks like +vMcÇ & Nic TVG’s masterful “Ψ-LSB¹” and the stunning pulse-width of K-Chaos’ “Full Out” step outside the breakbeat routines explored elsewhere, but that’s not to say those routines are left out in the cold. Familiar motifs sit juicily alongside the jungle business, and there’s no shortage of either across the collection.
Marvel Cinema and 88 Katanas’ “Night City” is a masterclass in high-octane, adrenaline-pumped, Sunday-morning ecstasy rush shadow tactics. And it slaps. Break-heavy and pure bliss for that inevitable peak-time pressure. Nyklonynth’s “Ket 1” is a beautiful piece of work. The command of polyrhythmic beats is second to none, and the welcome use of a beautifully tuned 303 adds delicious colour to the palette.
Elsewhere, voyedgr’s sublime “Xiomara” is textbook early drum and bass from the end of what we once called jungle. It would sound completely at home on the UK’s Reinforced Records alongside Goldie’s Metalheadz. Seminal drum and bass. Warmed up and ecstatic. A proper gurner. Tracks by Fr.om and Marvel Cinema bookend the release with superb cuts that capture both the opening of the collection and the end of the journey. Top-tier, non-derivative, introspective, forward-facing funk. Amplitude Modulation is a proper shot of life into the 160+ breaks underground, and a reminder that the old jungle spirit still has room to mutate, surprise and absolutely batter any dancefloor outside the box enough to desire authentic experimentation.
