Ruptured World :: Spacefold (Cryo Chamber)

We are entering a more vaporous, velvety, sonic and sonorous adventure, with plenty of serene pads, crystalline tones, and subtly intertwined melodies obtained from processed acoustic timbres or electronic oscillations.

Ruptured World is a recurring sound art project produced by Cryo Chamber as part of its latest developments. It is headed by Alistair Rennie (U.K.), who operates behind electronic machines and equipment. I discovered Ruptured World through the album Void Rituals. Its usual musical signature lies at a stylistic and aesthetic crossroads between outer-space ambient music (with a retro-ish, synthedelic feeling) and eerie cinematic electronica. The general mood is mostly soothing and emotionally transportive, playing with multilayered, meandering synth textures that move elegantly.

This album follows a rather similar pathway, offering wonderfully ethereal, sophisticated synth music with sci-fi spacey touches. The whole album delivers small electronic music epiphanies, playing with dreamily expressive synth tones, sustained chords, spacious waves, and articulated melodies, sometimes almost reminiscent of the legendary 70s Berlin School. The soundscapes convey a sense of depth and tragic emotion, as heard in the nostalgic and utterly vaporous, suspenseful “Triangulum” or in “Santurus A.”

Don’t expect pure subterranean dark ambient music here, like what we can find in Cryo Chamber‘s vast musical catalogue when experiencing the isolationist, brooding soundscapes of Caldon Glover, Apocryphos, Cities Last Broadcast… Instead, we are entering a more vaporous, velvety, sonic and sonorous adventure, with plenty of serene pads, crystalline tones, and subtly intertwined melodies obtained from processed acoustic timbres or electronic oscillations.

Recommended for fans of early Sacred inter-dimensional space music from the 80s (Michael Stearns, Steve Roach, Iasos…), avid listeners of immersive, oceanic drone music with a slowly moving melodious quality (Ophoi, Lingua Lustra, Matthias Grassow, Hyliard…), as well as Radio Massacre International and Air Sculpture.
