Shattered, explosive and mind-numbing bass
The timing for getting a new bass bin in my vehicle couldn’t have been better for Oddling Weather Forecast, an extended player and self-released gem from ΠΕΡΑ ΣΤΑ ΟΡΗ. Always willing to push miles ahead into abstract electronic substructures while reaching back for acid, rave, jungle, breaks, and ultra-low-end vibrations, this is music whose physical impact feels every bit as potent now as it might have in the mid-90s.
Shattered, explosive and mind-numbing bass seems to arrive from some distant region of our galaxy. “Pocket Arctic Protocol” plunges into groundbreaking, heavily saturated breaks, with low frequencies that surround, rattle and press against everything in their path. Rather than simply sitting underneath the rhythm, bass becomes a force of its own, punching through each layer and giving every break a heavier sense of momentum.
The title track doesn’t hold back on its beat artillery, throwing samples and staccato drums in all directions while those bass lines remain utterly unrelenting. They don’t merely reinforce the rhythm; they excavate foundations, shaking loose whatever is sitting on top. “Fan Failure,” meanwhile, brings a techno-breaks charge that fans of Altern 8 will consume with ease, its low-end drive keeping everything locked into a suitably frantic groove.
Closing with a concentrated summary of everything that came before, “Tweezers Sizzlers (Pressure Mix)” punctuates an EP that simply doesn’t let up with throwbacks to early The Prodigy—taking our brains to another dimension. It breaks through old-school references with punching creativity, restless curiosity and bass lines powerful enough to make that new bin earn its keep.
