Venetian Snares :: Greg Hates Car Culture (20th Anniversary Edition) (Timesig)

The classic Greg Hates Car Culture which, according to legend, Mike Paradinas (aka μ-Ziq / Planet Mu label operator) bought completely unaware at a local record shop, went home, and had his mind blown. Dirty, filthy, frenzied breaks cascading in almost random seeming patterns, ridiculous over-the-edge Negativland style samples being sprayed at you, and disjointed snippets and cuts of jungle bass.

Greg Hates Car Culture was Venetian Snares’ first ever vinyl release and Mr. Aaron Funk returns with the album that started it all. In some ways, the most pure Venetian Snares outing ever—this time around with bonus tracks previously only available on a rare, sought after cassette demo. The bonus tracks are great and in this case they fit perfectly with the rest of the EP and turn it into a very nearly album-length listening experience. You will not find any of Aaron’s later—more melodic—material on here, no vocals, no synthesizers, just sample-laden breakbeat malaria madness spewing out of a tracker of some kind.

This reissue will finally complete my vast VSnares collection, sitting nicely next to Doll Doll Doll and Find Candace. This is what you get Larry, when you wait a long time for a stranger to reissue his first EP.

Greg Hates Car Culture is available on Timesig, December 6, 2019.
