Milieu :: A Spiral In Basalt (Adventurous Music)

80 minutes of ambient drone; one might think he had invented time travel as I clearly lose the ability to chronologically track where I am in the day.

An exploration of longer sounds and singular, stretched structures

The sheer productivity that is Brian Grainger (aka Milieu), once again yields an extended ear-worthy piece. 80 minutes of ambient drone; one might think he had invented time travel as I clearly lose the ability to chronologically track where I am in the day. Although consistent throughout with little variety, pieces like this have a clear place in the musical world for their exploration of longer sounds and singular, stretched structures. Much like the 1,500 foot Basalt rock spiral in the Great Salt Lake, I’m invited to see it through to its full length and conclusion.

Reminiscent of earlier electronic studio works, I’m reminded of the current ORGAN2/ASLSP piece being played out in Halberstadt, part of the John Cage Organ Project—where note changes occur with months and often years between them, I see this track in the same vein as something so immersive that your only choice is to make of it what you will. A great choice for your next piece of environmental soundscape.
