This being his third release, Trees Company—perhaps a pun on the American sitcom television series Three’s Company—packs melodic and melancholic tunes in a nostalgic trajectory in almost 30-minutes. Early IDM blips and bleeps are hailed on tracks like “9 Volt Rave” and the bouncy lo-fi excursion of “River Key” with its nostalgic techno flare. As the title-track dips into downtempo acid-wash electronics, its old-school and childlike melody is funky and detuned ever so slightly. While Trees Company dips back and forth between aged melodies and shuffling clangs, “Dancing By Train Light” stands out as a technoid vision of the future—its midnight bells and straightforward rhythm could run forever. “Kava Kava” seems to just drift by with downtempo drums and airy ambient textures acting as an interlude with its 1:20 runtime. “On Another Plane” reminds us of classic Plod and Plone from yesteryear—bursting electrical bubbles floating alongside lively percussion. Dollarstore Keyboard has unleashed seven carefully crafted tracks with a vintage IDM edge.
