The Laborer :: The Changing Tide (Wist Rec)

The Laborer is the new ambient folk / sound experimentalism project of Richard Cunliffe. Regular listeners of Sound Art radio FM (U.K) are quite familiar with Richard’s passionate monthly program entirely dedicated to the underground facets of acoustic ambient / post-techno / weird and modern free folk. The Laborer project is a real curiosity and its first effort has recently been welcomed by the independent micro label Wist Rec (mostly known for their hand-made / DIY limited editions, active since 2011.) Offered as a special double CDR edition, this album follows the stylistic path of experimental music ever embraced by artists hosted by Wist Rec.

Consequently we are immersed in “process music” / ambient micro-tonalism with slow moving and abundant manipulated textures, sporadic noisy frequencies, miniature-like sound sculptures whose original source mainly comes from acoustic instruments, field recordings. Continuously evocative, this album sounds like a subtle and reflective practice of encouraging awareness about the fundamental poetry of every day life. Semi improvised and rather intuitive the musical exploration is surfing on affective memories, colorful reveries and time travels. Samples from public events, electronic dynamics are here to sustain harmoniously the instrumental sections offered by the fragmented melodious piano patterns and by the reversed organic sounds. The folk artist and singer Elsa Hasselgärde is giving some touching sequences in the impressionistic and dreamily introspective “The Tide Changing” / “The Changing Tide.” This first Cunliffe’s release is warmly recommended to avid ambient listeners of Wist Rec, Flaming Pines, Triple Moon, Time Released Sound, Hibernate and anyone in touch with semi-classical / minimal folk ambient excursions.

The Changing Tide is available on Wist Rec.
