A dynamic and diverse couplet
Crunchy, full-depth electronics and fluid downtempo grooves emanate from Promising/Youngster’s AE03 EP for Adepta Editions. Two tracks, each just over 4-minutes, and I’m reminded of City Centre Offices’ Block 7″ series from 1999 and early 00s—remember Fizzarum, Hermann & Kleine, Geiom, Arovane, Zorn, et al? Similar melodic vibrations interact with subtle data streams on AE03—available on 8″ vinyl (yes, an 8″). “Whales,” perhaps the brighter of the pair, seeks early Toytronic-era flares of brisk, bubbling and emotive beatwork and distant ambient layering. The twisting, acidic swirls of “Zen” traverses familiar chilled terrain; its drums and nonchalant rhythm exudes confidence and casual funk in all the right crevasses. Overall, a dynamic and diverse couplet that hits the sweet spot for contemporary abstract electronica with a nostalgic path—definitely a “promising youngster” to say the least.
