There are albums that build up gradually, and then there are albums that simply propel like a rocket right from the start. Maze follows the later trajectory. With an influx of braindance, acid, techno, and bass, each track is an impenetrable fortress of electronics and heavy hitting rhythmic flows.
Previously featured on Intellitronic Bubble and Móatún 7, Illocanblo (aka Ilya Bitekhtin) manages to surpass even himself. These sonic mazes allow the listener to find routes and patterns that lead unambiguously through complex networks of right-angled soundscapes. Highlights aplenty; “The Call,” “Sine Along,” “Maze,” “Like Sand Through Your Fingers,” and “Vapor” stand out, while “Eclipse,” “Makosh,” “The Movement,” and “Liberator” find similar routes, yet leads us to branches and junctions we weren’t expecting to turn to—and that’s not necessarily a bad thing, really.
Perhaps two EP’s would have tempered the albums’ powerful vibrations; toned it down, or spread it out, just a tad. Either way, Maze is jam-packed and ready for lift-off. Kudos as well to the excellent artwork featured on this release, available on CD and digital download!
