Tantalizingly surreal and punchy
Collaborations usually lend themselves to constructively varied results, and with Emil de Waal + Spejderrobot’s fourth release titled Brugt, the proof is in the pudding. Here we find delectable soundtracks and vintage electronic flutter submerged with instrumental discoveries, the likes of Squarepusher and Amon Tobin coming to mind—simply reference the opening track “Ryddet.” Each piece is subtle yet profound; technoid flourishes blend as time sits still. The shifting rhythms and jazz-like structures (ref. “Muhet” and the title track) are tantalizingly surreal and punchy. Within these sonically entangled tracks, the Mouse On Mars stylings of “Spøgt” hits all the right notes, and non-notes—its sporadic glitch, sprawling drums, and funky backbone are nothing short of engaging. Improvised electronics that balance themselves to avoid teetering over are presented here as a gorgeous limited edition white 12″ vinyl and digital version too. A worthwhile trip.
Brugt is available on Unit Shifter. [Bandcamp]
