Production Unit Xero (aka Ramon Mills) continues to dissect chaotic soundscapes, breaking the sonic spectrum with an abundance of glitch jungle breaks and beats on Mr. X. PUX finds buried breaks (“Aethry breezeway”) and subtly adds vintage bass and bleeps to create a dreamy landscape. The moment “Bubble Control One” finally implodes halfway through, the glitches and clicks seem to have been created by Mills using hundreds of beats to manipulate spastic soundscapes. “Mr. X’s Theme” is an unmistakable abstract labyrinth; its drum noises break as it descends farther, but the steady beat and catchy passages hold everything together. “Year of the Dragon” closes with an almost Aphex Twin-esque slant, slowing the speed just a little bit. Its lullaby groove and downtempo layers showcase the artist’s talent for restrained yet vibrant sound interactions. An album full of braindance and explosive energy that doesn’t stop for even a minute.
