Cepia 'Cepia'

[Listen | Purchase] One word that might come close to the sound of this self-titled masterpiece is dense. In a sense, Cepia creates thickened blankets of electric compositions that don’t necessarily rely on any specific formula. While the core of this release delves straight into casual, and often timeless layers of atmosphere, the extreme edges unveil a mechanical complexity without going too far into abstraction. Teasing the ears with droplets of magnetic analog-to-digital beauty, Cepia is a creative burst of subdued energy.

Huntley Miller, the artist behind the Cepia moniker has seen releases on respected labels such as Ghostly International, the now defunct Sublight, as well as remixes for highly respected artists including Lusine, Mr. Projectile, Dosh and Tiki Obmar. Not afraid to offer charming clicks and accessible melodies, Cepia travels into familiar territory as other experimentalists in the field of emotive instrumental music, however, it’s the left-of-center approach and cohesive flow that sparkles on this album. With most cuts in the three-minute range, Huntley surprisingly creates compositions that are fully realized and with a sense of consistently. Avoiding the usual dissection of individual cuts (we’ll leave that up to you), it’s clear that the scope of this self-release is substantially polished and will age gracefully in the years to come. It’s the roughened corners allowing the entire Cepia package to gel together and with a coating of lightly sprinkled dust settling on each piece, listeners will easily get a sense of Cepia’s developed sound. Timeless, uplifting, exploratory and at the heart of it all, Cepia is vastly dense. Don’t pass this one up, and at the very least, have a listen to the entire release (below) for a dose of what you’re getting into.
