Both Martin Boulton (aka Min-Y-Llan, Touched Music founder) and Jeroen Bax (aka exm) build incredibly surreal audio worlds. As their earlier releases were characterized as a “real demonstration of powerful synergy,” this eponymous release draws a recognizable pulse. The downtempo beats of “Dreams Of The Thoughtless” moves through an instrumental trip-hop and shoegaze ebb and flow into ethereal territory, while the ambient electronic orchestration and emotive elegance of opener “Primeval” illustrate this synergy right at the onset.
While “Emerald Skies” reflects pure electronic music from our most profound recollections of the past, the album experiments with saccharin bleep techno spheres (ref. “Arctic Tern”) peppered with Plaid-like melodic strands. Heogen, as a result, eloquently develop their own sonic signature as the album closes with atmospheric bubbling featured on “Purple Lullaby,” a serene, reflective, and cascading assemblage of drifting notes.
