Mysterium Tremendum is a beautiful and intriguing dark ambient release, in touch with obscure forces of the divine and higher forms of spiritual communion. Another important contribution to multidimensional drone music and cinematic sound design.

Winter-Light is among the few leading indie labels producing uncompromising releases of (esoteric) dark ambient music, deep, spacious audio, and synth-driven dronescapes. Based in the Netherlands, the label has been active for a little over a decade. We can also note important creative endeavors from relatively similar labels such as Zoharum, Eighth Tower, and Glacial Movements.

In terms of aesthetic signature and prominent themes, what characterizes Winter-Light is an avid interest in profound mystical spiritualism and a connection with cosmogony, illuminated visions from forgotten realms, as well as ideas emerging from retro-futurist philosophy. The sound artists gathered to design powerfully evocative inner soundscapes for the label are naturally inclined toward expanded reality and the spirit world, as suggested by the graphics, titles, and sound sources. Among the notable releases, we can mention efforts by Rapoon and Inner Visions Laboratory for their astonishingly bleak and spiritually entrancing soundscaping ritualism.

Ajna is a key artistic entity in the latest development of dark ambient music. The project has produced a handful of albums for highly regarded labels, including Cyclic Law and Reverse Alignment. I discovered Ajna back in 2016 with the album The Inevitable Immortality, which, to this day, remains among my top favorites when it comes to masterful atmospheric music with a brooding quality. The project is already a regular member of the Winter-Light community, notably with the deep, abstract, and dark synth-infused spaciness of Algol.

Mysterium Tremendum carries on the path of meditative, cathartic, and liminal spaces. It delivers a body of eerily fixed and contemplative pieces, slowly evolving and spiraling into bleak vastness. The thoughtful and cinematic depth is brought to the fore through a vast palette of sonic effects and processed micro-sounds. Some melodious and crystalline ambient moments appear from time to time, as in the velvety “Visions of Another World,” before the music returns to abstract, otherworldly tones in “Universal Cathedral” and the almost convoluted astral-symphonic dirge “Figures in the Distance.” The album closes with the alien-like, cathedralic, cyber-electronic-tinged “Glimpses of Eternity.”

All in all, this is a beautiful and intriguing dark ambient release, in touch with obscure forces of the divine and higher forms of spiritual communion. Another important contribution to multidimensional drone music and cinematic sound design.
