Before his untimely death Andrew Weatherall and his long-time collaborator Nina Walsh planned a series of EP’s to span 2020. The advantage of such a long term endeavor is that it allowed their ideas to unspool and then reconstitute over long melodic lines inviting thought without demanding conclusions.
An emphasis on heavy, heavy beats supporting deep, shuddering bass and dark atmospherics. With the drums playing such a heavy role in these songs one could be forgiven for mistaking it for a Scorn release from a bygone year.
Taking us back to early DeFocus, Delsin and Neo Ouija days where lightly sprinkled electronics birthed IDM’s trajectory into melodic and blissful moments, Chaircrusher captures familiar terrain with luminous sonic bubbles.
If mōshonsensu wanted to capture that certain IDM soundscape from yesteryear, he certainly hits the target with Solemn Grandeur.
