Despite the name of the record I doubt that Ultraphonist’s album
will be a big hit with the relaxation therapy crowd. Its a bit too
dark and creepy for that. The music, even though many would hesitate
to call it that, is almost exclusively constructed from really deep
bass tones. If there wasn’t already a genre called Drone, then this
album would have created it. Rumour has it the sounds on the album
were created by the members of Ultraphonist putting mikes on (in?)
different parts of their bodies. A few of the pieces have a slow
rhythm, others reminds me of a refrigerator in the cooling phase.
And yet. There is something deeply fascinating in the way
Ultraphonist combines their sounds, very suggestive. I would
hesitantly say beautiful, even. I’m rather listening to this than the
latest drivel the commercial stations keep pumping out five times an
hour.
