Snowbeasts :: + - (M-Tronic)

Haunted synth-experimental project, blending the dark ambient genre, ghostly minimalism and electronic body music with a fancy for lysergic-cosmic weirdness. This new album is welcomed by Paris based label M-Tronic. After a more archetypical but nonetheless efficient and evocative dark ambient debut in 2014 with the albums Snowbeasts and Ice & Snow, the project slowly progresses on a curious fusion of genres to create a particular sound universe.

Super punchy and propulsive electronics (as in the heavily rhythmical and ethereal sci-fi piece “Phantom Limb”) meet ominous cinematic ambiences as in the enthralling and heavily industrial “Midnight.” The beats kick loudly while darkly moving harmonies rise at the surface sometimes sustained by incantatory voices and ethereal ghostly lines which really enlighten the more menacing and lugubrious electronic content. This vocalized magic spell in dark ambient music reminds me some pieces by Leila Abdul Rauf and Ionophore. To be true the witch house genre (notably Mater Suspiria Vision) is not so far from the general music identity offered by this album and the result might satisfy appetite for industrial-goth sounds and demonic soundtracky themes. This new Snowbeasts can also convince fans of minimal dark electro by Somatic Responses, Hecq et al. My favorite tracks include the gloomy then dreamy “Selfless” and “The Sky Cracks Open.”
