A surreal musical panoramic

P è n i n s o l a r kept busy in 2021 (see Bandcamp), releasing several singles that somehow, unfortunately, slipped through our radar. We’ve recalibrated our receptors as these tracks (and many others not covered here), got a thorough listen over the holiday season. Sitting down to absorb seven saccharine soundscapes on a lazy (and rainy day in Southern California), the artist manages to calm things down, while at the same time fine-tuning strange and alluring electronic landscapes with ease and control.

A wide assortment of found sounds encapsulates downtempo strands on personal favorite—”Blossoming, Burning, The Conflagrancy Of Dunces,” as “Cytokine SM-102” escapes through cavernous voids filled with broken industrial elements, shattering blips and bleeps galore—a cacophony of drums, blistered rhythms, and vivid sound sculptures appear from the outer galaxy. For those familiar with P è n i n s o l a r’s past work on Clean Error and several compilation appearances on Section 27, Breathe and Digital Dizzy (to name a few), the multi-instrumentalist captures an array of evocative styles. Take “Enki, Anu, & The Hopi,” as an example. Here we find scattered vocals peppered with minimal technoid slivers and glitch bytes—allowing a surreal musical panoramic.

Mice Cortège Nymphaea Alba,” on the other hand, traverses minuscule B. Fleischmann-like clicks’n cuts, both blissful and saturated with a pulsing, hypnotic tone. Elsewhere, on “Sacsayhuamán,” P è n i n s o l a r shifts into cybernetic ambient-electronica, brightly polished breaks unfold midway through soundtrack lava flows—only to taper away silently into the horizon as if nothing ever happened.

But wait, there’s more!

On the chopped-up brittleness that is “Chapter Mind – breakmycurvature.2,” there’s an emotive drone buried deep in the fizz-fuzz pitter-patter beat shuffling that can’t be ignored. A highlight for these ears, this collaboration piece rises to the occasion with fragmented static that could run for an eternity. Closing out the singles, as I’m referring to them, “Tampoco” transmits a lively feel—an improvised, jazzy, and beat-infused organic expansion.

Releasing one track at a time (at least for now), and at his own pace, we’re here for the long haul.
