MANASYt :: The Genetic Lottery (Lunatic Rec.)

An album brimming with maintained malice, a malice that rails against automaton acceptance and the collective rot that has set in. A rubber faced prophet who throws two fingers into the air and lets his beats fly.

Intense and pure angry rejection of the now

Twenty years ago, MANASYt released Junk Mail. Since these first vinyl steps on the pioneering Kommando 6, the leather-bound visage of Petar Tassev has featured on labels like Bunker, Diffuse Reality and Touchin’ Bass. The productivity of this Bulgarian producer is truly frightening, his high musical output only matched by the quality. His latest album, The Genetic Lottery, is just landing in stores care of Lunatic Rec.

The lurching fairground churn of “Saraziumite” sets a dark tone. Blackened hues follow in the clinical “Lothar Schramm”, industrial brutality quickly coming the surface in this ephemeral piece. BPMs run high across the seven tracker. Racing rhythms are countered by an off-kilter melody in “Hiroshima Shadow”, distortion soaked bass bringing an extra touch of menace to the proceedings. If you’re looking for respite, it isn’t arriving with “Treatment #8.” Tempos may drop, but that threat that stalks the LP is still present. Brittle beats give way to a soundtrack of circus psych-horror. The percussion of “Doctrine” is more organic, hi-hats and thick kicks being the bedrock from which a electro lanced, EBM stained, bruiser emerges. It is the cold gleam of his machines that Tassev returns with “Black Circle.” Reels of computer melody are pierced and punctured by a relentless snare in this short and powerful work. The finale, “Autstic Karaokem” looms large. Basslines of speaker smashing size march to a skeletal beat, ellipses of groove roaming in a drugged haze.

Twenty years of music production hasn’t mellowed MANASYt one iota. The guttural groans and growls of his first records are still present, in fact they have amplified over time. However, this isn’t red-eyed rage. Instead, The Genetic Lottery is intense and pure angry rejection of the now. Through purging pulsations, Tassev seeks a line of attack that cuts through floors and fires up the mind. An album brimming with maintained malice, a malice that rails against automaton acceptance and the collective rot that has set in. A rubber faced prophet who throws two fingers into the air and lets his beats fly.
