Maelstrom :: ALPH4 (Central Processing Unit)

A finely executed EP that contorts itself around rugged electro-techno of yesteryear, but with an updated machined pulse.

Maelstrom (aka Joan-Mael Péneau) delivers an action packed 7-track extended player for the well oiled Sheffield-based CPU imprint. Through each piece you’ll find pistons firing at all angles, Detroit influences spread across acidic electro forms (“VZNEITIT”), and eroded blips, clicks, and mechanical beat boxes (“Dialectics”.) A standout takes shape on “Who Else Is Reading,” a mixture of classic techno slabs from mid/late 90s while maintaining an emotive punch. Maelstrom slows things down just a tad on the fluid modular-industrial rhythms of “Praxis.” The title track spins in a loop—its softer digitized bubbles flicker around synthesized debris, and surreal flux. “Letter From M” digs deeper into broken sound boxes, drums rattling at full throttle, the hypnotizing high tones spinning around and around. “Lost Echoes” (feat. Djedjotronic) slips into a sound stream of soft pads, brittle electronic details, and subterranean beatwork. A finely executed EP that contorts itself around rugged electro-techno of yesteryear, but with an updated machined pulse.
