Vintage Detroit techno-electro and robotic strands
Eddie Symons’ Recursor EP was released in October 2023, and his NULLPTR moniker maintains its rhythmic electro momentum. Detroit water vapor drifts just above rusty sewer lids amid dilapidated Motown streets that are audible within these half-dozen tracks. The title track creates moodier atmospheres with a magnetic glow, drawing us into a mist of vintage Detroit techno-electro and robotic strands. On “Phase Function,” Symons uses sparse structures throughout, and its retro appeal is undeniable as motoric rhythms and slow-motion melodies emerge in the background. “Portal,” the EP’s closing track, finds the artist producing just the right amount of energy to keep us fully engaged from beginning to end.
Recursor reveals Symons’ capacity to produce expansive soundscapes and emotionally charged electro-nics in the vein of early Detroit operators, such as Drexciya, Dopplereffekt, and Cybotron. A fantastic collection that really shouldn’t come as a surprise given CPU’s back-catalog and signature trajectory.
