A behemoth of heavy echoes
Jordon Rodriguez’s Hooligan debut on Renraku delvers rugged and pulsing electronics, “flexing his animated, texture-focused style.” While “New Floor” dives into rhythmic downtempo drum patterns and vocal slices to establish its flow, “Jester King” rummages through shuffling bass patches and melodic waves of dusty sound design particles. Hooligan conjures a behemoth of heavy echoes that are high-tech in construction, with abstract electricity and static impulses from miles away within “Textured Organics,” which closes with a defining crunch factor. A clever three-piece suite of braindance and slow-motion breakcore layered funk.
