Here, looped beats, sharp-panned synth lines, sparkling sampled piano, and glitchy “post-rock” electronica remind me of the early n5MD releases from the likes of Lights Out Asia, Epic45, and Near The Parenthesis.
An unexpected magical spark of discovery
There is a particular corner of electronic music where organic sounds of guitar, voice, and clicky percussion gently progress through an unfolding rhythm falling in between the overlapping genres. There was a lot of this music back at the early onset of IDM, where net-label artists explored the edges of various styles, until it (sadly) filtered, sieved, and sifted out through a fine mesh of categorization and landed on concrete, structured, and definitive labels and names. But I miss that music nevertheless. It felt a lot more fluid. It felt a lot more “from the heart.”
Listening to Fallen‘s latest album on Shimmering Moods reminds me of those early wanderings through the densely populated world of sounds, searching for that something special and unique, until it all became too late, bringing on the realization that it was the journey that was the real purpose all along. Maybe this is what Lorenzo Bracaloni meant when he titled this release as we are lone swans floundering in a deep river of sudden magic. Here, looped beats, sharp-panned synth lines, sparkling sampled piano, and glitchy “post-rock” electronica remind me of the early n5MD releases from the likes of Lights Out Asia, Epic45, and Near The Parenthesis.
I am not exactly sure if Bracaloni intended to induce this flashback with his sound, be it has certainly hit the spot, transporting me into that era. Maybe all this exploration is what’s been there from the start, its hidden depths of trial and error, its unexpected magical spark of discovery, and the ultimate realization of the individual’s ultimately solitary quest. I don’t know. But I know that Bracaloni‘s music triggers all these deep reflections, and in that, there is an impact, and his music has now spoken and evoked this resonant response. And in the current day and age of digital releases, a torrent of easily-accessible music, and proliferation of copycat genres, this is all that one can ask for. This is all that my mind needs.
