An excellent addition to the legendary Shitkatapult catalog and a great standalone album—Lunik is also good for midnight rides and dancehall spins alike.
Lunik is the new full length from Berlin-based Frank Bretschneider. Simply put, it’s an incredible album evoking a variety of moods and emotions from within a select and sparse network of sound and rhythm. Slightly reminiscent of To Rococo Rot and Marconi Union, the release remains unique and wholly its own entity.
Each track title on Lunik ends with the letter K. As to what that means, one can only guess, but the hard sound of the letter embodies much of the esthetic on Lunik; that of electronics, hard sounds and rhythms meshed with deft arrangement and sequencing. “Elektrik” opens with digital bells, a jerking rhythmic loop and select noise scattered all about while subtle bass envelops the background. The track evolves into a journey into a grimy, futuristic soundscape. “Logik” could almost be mistaken for a Marconi Union track but for the hard-edged sounds. “Elastik” is a loping, funky number, dropping washes of drop-tuned samples in and out like glimpses behind closed doors at a robot sex club. “Plastik” is a hypnotic affair with metallic rhythms inducing a trance state through solid repetition. “Sputnik” is a standout piece, in that it’s by far the funkiest and most obvious dance type cut with Rhodes electric piano keys providing a definitive hook.
