Playgrounds: Recess by Portland, Oregon’s Greystar features a variety of braindance, bass, shattered percussion, and punctuated breaks. A massive 17-track collection that stretches into numerous sonic trajectories, the multifaceted album follows playground 1 from 2023 and continues to span a wide range of experimental electronic avenues. Intriguing sound sculptors join in for recess; reassembling its original stems to generate whole new transformations where noisier blips and bleeps compositions shatter into extraterrestrial shades—including ambient/soundtrack hues as well. Greystar’s “brittle melodic data streams” are molded into shape-shifting contrasts, textures, and tones by Ezeki, Monofeel, Lee, and Med111cen, resulting in a pulsing cacophony that will appeal to a broad spectrum of listeners in the expansive IDM arena. Certainly a mixed-bag of perplexing and squelching electronics, Playgrounds: Recess remains utterly playful and sporadic throughout.
