Chris Herbert’s Grisaille is a haunting journey through grainy ambient textures, fractured memories and shadowy soundscapes where beauty emerges from the dust of decaying dreams.

Moments of intimate contemplativeness
Active since the early 90s, with releases by Davide Shea, and headed by multi-talented sound artist Lawrence English, Room40 figures among the true leading indie labels in the development of several subgenres of electronic and avant-garde music (from musique concrète to minimalism, lowercase…). A number of veteran artists (David Toop, Luc Ferrari, Ben Frost…) as well as promising new names (Hari Maia…) enrich the label’s catalogue, always attentive to profoundly moving sonic explorations, computer-based or simply based on electro-acoustic instrumentation.
The work of Chris Herbert represents the more near-ambient face of Room40, with moments of intimate contemplativeness behind the experimental incursions. Chris Herbert‘s musical identity lies at the crossroads of experimental ambient and instrumental drone music, enhanced by micro-noises, eroded sound textures and organic field recordings. His soundscapes are built around dense layers of sounds, deliciously moving, undulating and immersive, suggesting imaginary landscapes and inner pictures engraved in affective memory.
A reflective and lonesome textural tapestry ::
This album is made of compelling, distorted and delicately textured aural soundscapes that guide the listener towards utterly shadowy, wistful, then enlightening feelings. Grisaille presents a body of carefully crafted and tasteful ambient day-dreaming reveries, filled with windy noises and aerial, nostalgic melodies that can be perceived and gently arise from the wandering, reflective and lonesome textural tapestry of sustained sound motifs.
The album starts slowly with a sombre experimental prelude built around noisy interferences and processed found sounds. “Image Hunger” carries on with a sorrowful minimal vibe, of deep beauty and elegance. The dusty, slightly fractured and suspenseful ambient sceneries that follow will lead you into a state of profound quietude, in search of an immediate sense of poetical escapism. Micro-electronic sounds swell in a sentient way in the vast universe of our subconsciousness, prodigiously reactivating engulfed souvenirs.
Grisaille is a powerful and inventive album that is highly recommended for fans of autumnal, grainy, organic and tasty poetical ambient tragedies by Andrew Thomas, Marcus Fjellström, Zimoun and Marcus Fischer.
