The combination of noise bursts, crackles akin to a detuned radio, a return to field recordings, reverberant knob-twiddling, and terrifying noise washes, creates a powerful soundtrack that evokes a theme of nature versus industry.

Sonorous bursts of static

Alessandrop Ragazzo’s La deviazione del profilo—translated to “The profile deviation“—is a contemporary-sounding album that combines noise and tonal elements in a proportional and effective manner. “Status” opens with a field recording of a public place (maybe a market). This recording transforms into a noisy loop collage, which is joined by other scorched elements as a deep drone is mixed in. The humming gradually changes in tone and other qualities. The combination of noise bursts, crackles akin to a detuned radio, a return to field recordings, reverberant knob-twiddling, and terrifying noise washes, creates a powerful soundtrack that evokes a theme of nature versus industry.

The track “III” is comprised of light noises, pulses, and oscillations. Sounds beneath the surface resemble a radio broadcast of a Middle-Eastern track, somewhat like Einstürzende Neubauten’s “Armenia” (Drawings Of Patient O.T. — 1983, Some Bizzare). Effects are worked into the sounds, such as delay and reverberation providing an expansive character to “III.” The track concludes with oscillating pitches and a graceful fade-out.

Track “I” is an industrial drone piece featuring segments of noise collage, sonorous bursts of static, and sounds seeming to be radio-generated, which open into more vaster and open sonic spaces. At times, the track sounds loud and chaotic like a Winter snowstorm. Later, a deep mechanical pulse loop is added, which at the conclusion disintegrates into a particular whir.

Overall, the acoustic palette of La deviazione del profilo is consistent. It’s a captivating noise/drone release that’s expertly put together and makes me think of pieces by musicians like Merzbow and Daniel Menche, especially his Field Of Skin — 1997, Soleilmoon, and remaster.
