Cygnus :: Tesseracter (Central Processing Unit)

Starker sounds are present but they are juxtaposed deeper and textured moments for a balanced outing.

00001101_featCentral Processing Unit is getting back to its roots. Following the excellent Trifolium by Carbon Flex the Sheffield based label is returning to its first signing. In 2012 Texas based Cygnus, Philip Washington, clicked the CPU switch with Newmark Phase. Two years on and the first born returns with Tesseracter.

Newmark Phase was characterized by a wooziness, staggered chords linked to an Electro coldness. This latest effort picks up where that 2012 excursion left off. The title piece dips playful, almost innocence chords, into rippling pools of tweak. Samples rise and fall, a staccato snare keeping time. That haze, that mist, is maintained for acid tinged “Strange Hyper.” The dawn begins to break with the clear, yet wavering, bars of “Technologic.” Bright, cascading lines shiver in the morning air as rhythms weave beneath blurred samples. Vocals come to a head with the charming plink of “Video Games.” The track has a touch of Ed DMX to it, the clean execution and wacky computer centric notes harking back to early Breakin’ Records days.

Hopefully Tesseracter will see Cygnus getting more vinyl attention. Washington has a definite talent, his spirited tracks enliven and come with a comforting warmth. Starker sounds are present but they are juxtaposed deeper and textured moments for a balanced outing.

Tesseracter is available on Central Processing Unit.
