A multitude of bass and rolling instrumental rhythms
Over 50 years separated from Miles Davis’ Bitches Brew that combined jazz, rock, avant-funk and psychedelia—Xenomorph Jazz Ensemble’s Glitches Grew is a powerful and abstract collection, brought to us by the predominately electro label Roulette Rekordz, and steers just outside of what’s come before in their catalog. Quite a surprise, and let’s say somewhat out of the blue, these seven tracks twist and turn with a multitude of bass and rolling instrumental rhythms we’re propelled to absorb. Tracks like “Red Dress” come across as improvised and off-the-cuff, its magnetic thudding charge and data stream runs a parallel groove with technoid spheres and early electronica where “Streetwalker” casts a darker spell of harder four-to-the-floor jolts and still maintains a jazzy pulse. Acid shifts and spills galore, “Nouvelle Vague” pulses with fidgeting low-end rounding out this vast sonic assortment. A creatively surreal onslaught with its title track taking the cake via blips, bleeps, and submerged synths fluttering in bass-infested drums—fans of Meat Beat Manifesto (Actual Sounds & Voices era) might eat this one right up. Let the glitches grow, or perhaps growl!
