Wahn (alias Erwan Charier) is a highly acclaimed project from France, with roots in a plural field of electronic subgenres, from dubby ambient to challenging IDM with a dream feel, glitch, and shifting techno-ish moods. His last album, recently published on Mahorka, introduces the listener to an intriguing, enigmatic, and shadowy mental landscaping journey through kinetic hypno-grooves, swelling digital ambiences, and cinematic atmospherics. It progressively installs a profound sonic bath where abstract motifs meet swelling tones and sometimes crystal-like detached melodies. We can easily appreciate the amount of ideas developed in the album and the thoughtfully crafted soundscapes brought up to the fore.

Re: Echo Mist Light offers a spellbinding collection of re-imagined pieces based on the initial album by Wahn. This release celebrates the 500th release of the independent imprint, a well-known publisher which cannot be missed by avid followers of adventurous and multifaceted forms of electronic music, at the frontier between radical avant-garde and more immediate, transportive soundscapes. For this special album, the label reunites a bunch of sound artists from its family circle.

Musically, this re-work oscillates between vaporous downtempo feel (notably with Signaltoerung), post-industrial mechanized, fractal-like glitchy ambiences (Brainquake, Valance Drakes), almost groovy trip-hop excursions (Mass&Delayer), and abstract minimalism covered by impressionist, soothing synthadelic waves (Dissolved). The album closes with the two most expressive and emotionally inclined lysergic ambient tracks of the album, designed by Cognition Delay, then Substack.

Despite its diversity and wider stylistic inclination, the album keeps the spirit of the original Wahn’s album and contributes to positioning the Mahorka label among key representatives of electronic-based music with a fancy for broader experimentations and a larger vision about what sonic worlds mean. Quite recommended for fans of thrilling ambient dub, downtempo, and neo-psychedelic purposes.
