Disintegrating into glitch-like substructures
In a new chapter of his vcam project, James Long adds modular components to his existing abstract electronic architectures and combines raw audio into four distinct breakdowns. Long characterizes his latest collection as a “desire for the sounds in my music to be more reactive to each other—reactive in ways that are just not possible using MIDI and a DAW.” The extended slow-motion mechanical, industrial, and abrasive sounds that make up “Helmi” last for nearly thirteen minutes until disintegrating into glitch-like substructures. The blistered sci-fi beatwork of “gapter,” with its electronic crunch and funk, alters the mood while its swirling debris keeps it entwined and focues. “par_e[ium” drafts a minimal technoid sphere, its melodic fibers flow through translucent layers, while “indbni” dives into Autechrean subspace quarters where pulsating scrapes and found-sounds coalesce. Collisions is the result of a talented musician not afraid to try new (modular) techniques as he navigates a complex learning curve where the reactive theme takes full form.
