Valance Drakes’ sound shapes cascade, shift, and deform like cloud structures thousands of feet above us. The atmospheric glitch strands we’ve become accustomed to have begun to change colors. Where previous releases would be consumed by subtle sonic manipulations in front of our eyes and ears, A Weak Shield Protects Not—cut on transparent 7″ vinyl and digital audio as a three-piece suite—features surreal ambient winds meeting at the center of low-pressure systems that Valance Drakes carefully drafts. The same cloud structures that drifted apart now seem to converge and coalesce, forming beautifully overcast sceneries as light particles reflect and pass through.
