Glitchy snapshots from a multi-talented sound sculptor, Michael Valentine West refines emotive electrical impulses on this three-piece suite. Crispy audio treats galore; this release opens with a melancholic, ambient shifting, and emotive title track as the more organic and chopped up “I am purity” delves into funkier broken beats and sliced vocal bits. MVW has a knack for left of center soundtracks that crumble and expand. While his contributions are dark and gloomy, you can also feel them merge and bring us to the light.
A scattered pulse unravels on the closing “self disgust is self obsession” where the beats are much more chiseled and lively while its moving harmony draws us in. Even within the short runtimes, MVH pulls it all together and has us grasping for more.
The track titles, I’m sure, have much deeper meaning than the music itself, and one can only imagine the source. Suffice to say, we’re glad MVW sculpts from these personal pathways, creating utterly surreal conduits of sound. All the while, one can’t help but wonder how much energy was expended in the process.
I should have lied like everybody else is available on Urban Virus. [Bandcamp]
