MVW displays some of his most experimental sound sculptures to date in a space that continually changes shape.
Decimated sound design and erratic beat patterns clash
Michael Valentine West, a specialist in abstract and distorted glitch dynamics, keeps working to compress the smallest beats and blips into manageable pieces. The experimental element is amplified on She Dreams of Lynchings. A level that is challenging to categorize because the sonic world that MVW inhabits is mysterious and semi-melodic. Decimated sound design and erratic beat patterns clash with hazy blocks falling downhill. The brilliant glitch decomposer has explored territory that only a select few artists have managed to capture, such as that of Valance Drakes, Mantle of Gets, Hexalyne, and Özcan Saraç, which is made even more clear on the album’s title track as well as “1140 Royal Street.” Even with the ending malfunctioning cluster known as “Everyone Knew It,” MVW displays some of his most experimental sound sculptures to date in a space that continually changes shape.
