A microcosm of glitch and mechanical gaps

On Unfinished Business, sharp beat patterns and darker technoid spheres are juxtaposed with the micro melodic muffling found in industrial dance music (the new and improved IDM acronym). With six innovative transmissions from the periphery, Mike Slansky (also known as Unterm Rad) launches this extended player into uncharted territory. There are pulses, fragmented electronics, and dips and dives through mysterious universes, with every thread appearing to be cut from the same cloth.

Often paralleled among artists such as Richard Devine, Xanopticon, and Qebrus, the Chicago native tilts sound forms into a microcosm of glitch and mechanical gaps, exposing what is arguably the pinnacle of his discography. His current release for Point Source Electronic Arts follows 2020’s Stress Fractures album, which likewise produced an assault of sharpened rhythmic electronics and brought a few pals along for the ride, is a testament to his important influence, not only for PSEA—as co-founder—but also on the early sound and vision of Tympanik Audio in the late 2000s. It appears as though Slansky has finally taken care of his unfinished business. Or is this only the beginning?
