Jimmy LaValle’s vast experience as a soundtrack composer is deeply expressed on this EP as he masters the art of creating moods through sound that, on the way around, can arouse a vast set of cinematic imagery and, in consequence, blasts of emotion.

Last July Jimmy LaValle, aka The Album Leaf, self-released Blast, an ambient 5-track EP molded into a continuous journey that evokes emotion and meditative moods. It was originally conceived as a live improvisation performance recorded for the internet radio app called Blast, but later on the artist added a Midas touch by partnering with saxophonist Aaron Shaw (Aaron D4VD), who complemented the work with great melody line derivations harmonizing perfectly with the resequenced electronic recording.

The EP begins with “Path,” a track that sets the tone for the release in terms of time management for the listener—by demanding attentive engagement on the contrary of the fast paced contemporary life—as it brings subtle sound elements that deserve a proper immersion. And, of course, the saxophone parts make one’s mind sail on a different path of today’s norm in music consumption. “Ellipse” follows with an upgrade on the electronic sound palette since the hypnotizing arpeggio creates an initial tension, a quite aseptic feeling that evolves to a dreamy mood as warm pads enter the game. Aaron Shaw’s sax punctuation is a high point, since the wind nature of the instrument acts like a sexy airy voice. My favorite track of the release.

Differently from the previous tunes, which present short percussive parts, “Course” emphasizes time measurement with a very low profile but constant distorted and reverbing kick; an element that brings a moto continuum feel while the different textures and melodies fade in and out. On the other hand, the beat-less “Circulation” dives into introspection as its delicate sounds flourish, which later connects to the closer, “Trajectory,” only to rise up in a stacking crescendo which culminates on a beautiful climax that gently fades away.
