Playful electronics merges with curiosity

Available December 10th, we were pretty excited to get an early listening to the MONOC EP by Tokyo, Japan-based Satoshi Kanno who has been producing electronic music since 2013 and unveiling this 4-track extended player with the transplanted ADSR Collective (originally based in Vancouver, now also located in Tokyo). The result is an astounding listening environment where the surreal engages with the logical, and playful electronics merges with curiosity.

Reading the press-release, “shapes transform constantly,” is an accurate way to view this recording—a blissful foray into upbeat, high-energy electronics with a gentle pulse. “Hide Out” dips through slippery techno spheres and melodic tethers as “Stream of Thought” takes on a more subdued rotation—its low viscosity flow, Detroit inspired glitch, and half-tempo is engaging and eventually spreads its wings in its last few minutes. On the title track, Satoshi Kanno reveals the impacting harmonies of his instruments, allowing leftfield techno infusions to run rampant with fuzzy bass thuds and syncopated rhythms. Closing with the aptly-titled “Elastic,” you’ll find piano keys slowly merging with atmospheric synth washes and lightened pitter-patter beatwork from a far away place we’ve yet to discover.

Perhaps an invitation to what lies ahead, a connection between where we are now, both “precious and ephemeral,” as stated eloquently in the press-release, MONOC is a captivating listen.

MONOC is available on ADSR Collective December 10, 2020. [Bandcamp]
