Neuro… No Neuro’s Positive* for Mille Plateaux, one of the leading experimental electronic labels, is based on “thin slices of memory, and the disintegration of their existence“—where stretched sounds split into smaller segments. Kirk Markarian of Tucson, Arizona, sheds these minuscule ambient sources under the title Neuro… No Neuro. However, we uncover much more unusual noises with Positive* than we did with previous findings. Markarian weaves a diverse mix of distinct electrical strands across each of its twelve sections, even while his usage of drones, tones, and buzzing melodic shards veer even more into isolated abstraction.

Well-crafted two to three-minute pieces—apart from the lovely drone-hypnosis of “Shared Disorientation”—and pitter-patter glitch beats drift on “This Time For Sure,” “A Day With Focus,” and the closing “Less Yakkin`, More Stakkin`.” Despite Positive* being positively minimal in every way, NNN dabbles in low-flying ambient sound shapes throughout (ref. “Right Next To Myself” and “Almost Through”) and we’re consistently amazed by the deftly orchestrated approach to his brittle sonic structures. Let’s keep these memories nurtured, and stay positive.

Positive* is available on Mille Plateaux. [Bandcamp]
