Embarking on classic/early-era Warp electronics with an Artificial Intelligence lacquer, Marco Simioni administers an EP quintette for Detroit Underground. Filled with rapid-fire glitch and Aphex Twin’style acid twitches, there’s a mystic calm (ref. “Stuck between Dimensions”) that transpires track by track. Delving into abstraction and skewed electrical mayhem—reference “Satoshi (Live Improvisation)” as an example—these are not only fractured IDM slabs on display. There’s a slew of mechanical constructs with a soul buried deep within. Take “Akihabara”—its scorched post-industrial “Gantz Graf” style warfare begins to slowly ease up as a muffled and emotive ambient undertone emerges. The slapstick beats, bass and distortion are in full affect on Phaneron, and yet Simioni continues to gather harmonious light sources and microscopic details as evidenced on “Galata” and the more subdued “8th Dimension” that counterbalances both atmospheric tones with crunchy soundtrack dynamics. Overall an impacting intergalactic sonic foray not worth ignoring.
Phaneron is available on Detroit Underground. [Bandcamp]
