Tuning into and out of phase, Levels’ debut finds solace within the microscopic confines of broken industrial fragments, digging for lost rhythmic bits, and assembling them via a cohesive, and subdued energy. “Mysta” does just that, wondering bells surround low-end bass beats, as metallic objects crash into each other and a whistling closure brings an organic element to this sci-fi soundtrack. Elsewhere minimal electrical swirls slide between crunchy drums on the slow-motion beauty that is “Slo-Forms.” Levels administers a sense of bewildering sonic shades—the short-running broken industrial-electro of “Gp-17” is a blissful lost artifact that merits repeated listening to digest completely. Ambient electronic swirls are found on “Los Aguaro,” a meandering musical nugget that dips into serene sonic landscapes. An experimental influx of noisier tones and drones can be found on the hypnotizing “Corridors” track, while “Village ooc” dances about via Celtic slivers and an organic, almost tribal fascination. In all, this self-titled album may be difficult to pin down, and that’s perhaps its strongest asset.
Levels is available on Umor Rex.
