Larvae return with their latest foray into new sonic territories
Quietly operating out of Austin, Texas—Matthew Jeanes and long time collaborator Christopher Burnett (better known as Larvae) return with their latest foray into new sonic territories. All These Worlds Are Yours contains five tracks in which each song is named after one of Jupiter’s many moons; and once you hear the music contained within, it proves to be an appropriate theme for the release. A bit of a departure from the downtempo dub sounds of Dead Weight or the distorted drum’n bass of Empire, previously released on Ad Noiseam, Larvae find themselves delving into electro territory, working mainly in the 130 bpm range. Sprinkle heavily treated electric guitar layers from Jeremy Wilkins on top of the machine-like grooves, and you’ve got the basic vital elements needed to form All These Worlds Are Yours.
The opening track “Amalthea” makes an immediate statement with a deep haunting bass pad that rolls along throughout the song. Snappy and precise percussion cuts through a full frequency range consisting of densely layered synthesizer harmonies and instances of muffled electric fuzz. The next track “Io” is a bit more stripped back, but stays locked in at a steady tempo while dueling plucked synth melodies alternate back and forth. “Europa” fixates on a slower rhythm than the first two tracks. Prominently placed shoegaze style guitars make for a unique genre bender—utilizing electronics and reverberating guitar tones to great effect. The energy picks back up a bit with “Ganymede.” An infectious squirming low-end thump carries this track from start to finish. Shadowy and ethereal in nature, this is dark electro at its finest. “Callisto” begins rather ominously as dissonant strings give one the sense of being alone, floating weightlessly in space.
Equally enjoyed on speakers, or in headphones All These Worlds Are Yours should be played loudly, and in a space where it wouldn’t matter if you lost control of your bodily movements as these grooves are sure to get into into your bones!
