Kayla Painter’s Tectonic Particles, a current take on quiet details (see Arovane, Field Lines Cartographer, ’t Gerius for previous), exhibits the work of the Bristol-based producer and sound artist, a hub of creative energy with a nicely plumped up portfolio of recordings and live AV performances, support from leading DJs, coverage in the music press, not to mention her lecturing, workshops, and mentorship of other artists.

Tone is set early on, Painter, aptly named, palette primed—mix of delicate melody, diverse timbre and fertile found sound in eclectic minimalist spirit, technical prowess harnessed to sonic sensibility. So, What’s It About? For KP (pace intentional fallacy), TP concerns ‘small processes that make gigantic differences in the Universe.’ Specifically, on “Star Stuff,” say, you may see ‘the star burning out that explodes, creating stardust, creating us’ or “Pure White Stalactite,” more overtly, ’the drip over a hundred thousand years that forms a stalactite;’ “Forest Floor” may secrete ‘the seed that travels on the wind, finds a home, grows and joins the mycelium network;’ “All Things as a Whole” may harbor ‘the drop of water that seeps in the crack which splits the cliff.’ A final “Ontology” surely shows ‘it’s about coming from stardust, returning to dust, having a temporary stay on this rock.’ (quote excerpts from KP blurb).

Musically, Tectonic Particles is essentially about choreographing micro-worlds of timbral play into subtly affecting recursions and progressions.
