‘t Geruis :: Terre, Poussière (Quiet Details)

Behind ’t Gerius is Belgian sound-wrangler, Daniel, who’s hit on a hermetic audioworld at once delicate and distorted, refined and uncouth; sound seen as if through a glass blurrily, yet sharply—alive with microsound like a fungi forest close-up.

Recursive unveiling of treated textures and hues

Quiet Details, whose keynote is for each release to represent an individual interpretation of its name, hosts ’t Geruis (rustle, rush – Dutch) for Terre, Poussière (Earth, Dust – Fr.). As with his previous Slow Dance on Moss Beds and Various Thoughts and Places (Lost Tribe Sound), Bain D’Étoiles (Laaps), and Vast (Line), it’s possessed of a cadence of unfolding, recursive unveiling of treated textures and hues, characterized as ‘…a way of giving a tone to passion, wonder, surprise and confusion. The thing that makes your day special, […] that make a person beautiful or […] that make a place feel like home.’

Behind ’t Gerius is Belgian sound-wrangler, Daniel, who’s hit on a hermetic audioworld at once delicate and distorted, refined and uncouth; sound seen as if through a glass blurrily, yet sharply—alive with microsound like a fungi forest close-up, pointing ‘the little events that create big stories, the momentary instants that only later make the impression that flew away so quickly.’ Driven by environs, album title vaguely gestured to, it’s a-swim in etiolated tone-colors and rustling/rushing vapors (’t Gerius – Dutch, remember?), as if remembering it for you in [r[e]]motion. Take a minimal electroacoustic base, add orchestral / ambient synth slivers, piano fragments, mix in misc noise. Variations on a mood theme: a queasy unease haunts “The Kindest Touch,” feelings of nostalgia “Rester” and “Away Away,” and a kind of warped uplift on the Eno-in-a-blender of “May You Resonate.” “In Purple”’s stately air becomes anthemic on “Orange Lakes Hilltops” before “A Gentle Awakening” and “To Hold A Heavy Heart” close in wistful reflection and fond recall.

Ultimately, this oblique music seeks more subconscious engagement, further listens to uncover those ‘little events that create big stories, the momentary instants that only later make the impression that flew away so quickly’ or ‘scents, colours, images, light, darkness, sadness and love. Spring bark, concrete after rain, gravel and sand.’ And ’t Geruis’s ‘symphonies of the interstices’ (Tartine de contrabasse) make Terre, Poussière an apt choice to be the first mastered in-house, as most qd releases will be in future, deepening the nature of the label’s connection to its artists and to overarching concept.

Terre, Poussière is available on Quiet Details. [Bandcamp]
