Kayla Painter :: Infinite You (Castles In Space)

A little less on the club orientated side than previous releases, Infinite You explores darker prospects and leftfield entities.

Ethereal tones and glitched out electronica

Perhaps you have heard of Kayla Painter? I first came across her when they were announced as one of Brownswood’s Future Bubblers back around 2017. The mentored program which was founded by DJ and Radio legend Gilles Peterson gives budding artists and producers guidance into the industry with talent development. Over the course of Kayla Painter’s career she has received airplay from the likes of Mary-Anne Hobbs, Tom Ravenscroft, Nemone, Huw Stephens, Steve Lamacq and of course GP—making her very much BBC 6 Music approved! Not one to remain tied to the studio either, touring has seen her open up for the likes of Rival Consoles (Erased Tapes) and more recently Carl Cox and The Orb. She has also spent time focusing on developing her own AV showcase that has been touring the UK.

Is there also room to mention KP’s music work for Disney, Channel 4, Discovery Channel and a range of independent films, as well as having been commissioned by Universal Publishing to write an EP for synch…

So I’ll ask again, perhaps you have heard of Kayla Painter?

For those still shaking their heads, I imagine you are most definitely interested to know. Personally, I think right now is a great time to familiarize yourself with their output. After an excellent string of self releases, it is nice to see them joining a roster that will hopefully blossom into a fruitful relationship for future outings.

Presenting their latest EP Infinite You on Castles In Space.

Ethereal tones and glitched out electronica combines with tape saturated textures and melodic intrigue. This is quintessential KP. A little less on the club orientated side than previous releases, Infinite You explores darker prospects and leftfield entities.

Exploring darker prospects and leftfield entities ::

Maybe it is because of the aforementioned work in film and their love for Sci-Fi we garner an adventurous soundtrack that remains playful at times by keeping up the spontaneity in sound design—in itself this makes the release feel right at home and in safe hands with Castles In Space, which is home to releases by Polypores, clocolan, Dohnavùr, and Jilk who has collaborated with Kayla in the past.

At a runtime of 33-minutes what is demonstrated on Infinite You is Kayla Painter’s dexterity in production styles and sonic approaches. The EP touches varying notions, yet it feels very much complete and complimentary throughout.

Highlight tracks include “Broadcast from the Collapse,” for its fractured loops that whilst promoting ambient contains an unharnessed tempo that engages in a hypnotic sway. “Mountains of Death” takes an experimental stance on prior ventures—those familiar with Constellations (self released, 2021) will see crossovers in what almost feels like leftfield hip-hop mixtape instrumentals, like that of Odd Nosdam & cLOUDDEAD material.

For fans of Khotin, Julianna Barwick, and early Nosaj Thing.
