Trapped in an extended dreamlike sequence
This 32-minute audio collage titled FIND YA GURL by Adrian Bertolone (also known as Icky Reels, Ay, and Ay Fast) traverses several shifting sonic chapters. Distracted field recordings and textural elements are found throughout Icky Reels’ compositions, which, in this case, open with ominous deep electronic regions of ambient, soundtrack, and synth swirls soaked several miles below the surface. It’s almost as though we’re trapped in an extended dreamlike sequence surrounded by hundreds of found sounds, kaleidoscope visuals, and instrumental tones and pulses, complete with shuffled vocal samples, downtempo lounge excursions, and glitchy hip-hop slicing layers.
With a sort of vintage electronic sheen, the smorgasbord of distinct and blurry noises finally opens up halfway through. A rhythmic slurry combines musique concrète and unorthodox looping sounds of raw materials, maturing like a fine wine that has been fermented for years only to be exposed to air, changing its flavor minute by minute. We are led out of this surreal dream by the track’s closure of lively funky technoid fissures and locked-in rhythm, which also features grooving guitar portions and a disjointed soundtrack atmosphere. What an anomalous trip.
