Ümlaut :: Half the Speed of Light (Self Released)

Jeff Düngfelder (also known as Ümlaut) develops a musique concrète resource and minuscule time-capsules to lose yourself within.

Operating at half the speed of light, this complex album consists of fourteen tracks spanning a multitude of sound sources, field recordings, and painstakingly crafted sonic peripherals. Transforming a variety of electronic gadgets with elements of glitch, micro-tones, and time-stretched drones into adventurous sonic routes, Jeff Düngfelder (also known as Ümlaut) develops a musique concrète resource and minuscule time-capsules to lose yourself within.

As stated in the liner notes, percussion and rhythmic sequencing “gives way to a total abandonment of rhythm.” These jumbled particles appear to move in hundreds of different directions without following any discernible pattern. Tiny elements of structure evolve, only to fade away in the distance.

Minimal in nature, these soundtracks collide and recombine with obscure samples and relaxed instrumental transformations allowing Ümlaut to skillfully generate textured layers. These raw experiments eventually combine with the breakdown and reassembly of delicate momentum.

Musical and non-musical shapes are seamlessly formed and deformed throughout, offering a bewildering audio collage that eventually coalesces deep in the background. Simply baffling.
