Global Goon :: The Acid Arcana EP (Adepta Editions) — Video premiere

A powerful collection with Johnny Hawk polishing acid-drenched mayhem, blistering electronics, and a penchant for old and new-school flares.

Punctuating IDM and shape-shifting rhythms

Johnny Hawk (aka Global Goon) has been at his craft since the early/mid 90s as one of the IDM originators starting up with Aphex Twin’s Rephlex Records. He’s been active on and off ever since—and recently more so with his unique blend of braindance and acid-tinged electronics coming full circle. A household name indeed, he unleashes a half dozen tracks spread across the label’s second 12″ vinyl release (also available digitally), extending his sonic reach.

The baseline is thick on opening piece “munktithers” slicing through roughened electro and acid as the technoid clusters of “trasjepg” echo and flex. Global Goon punctuates IDM and shape-shifting rhythms as the drum’n bass shadows of “Thesques” closes the A-side at breakneck speed. B-side doesn’t let up either; with “ecw003” getting the pulse moving with smudged beats and bass as the 303’s work in sweet harmony while the slippery percussive jab’n breaks of “rtuuqula” marry up with saccharine melodies that are classic Global Goon. Closing on an acidic high note, “phlarablob” throbs with the heaviest acid-techno and rave assemblage of the lot—easily providing a full-spectrum dancefloor-ready groove (or armchair listening with both feet tapping away.)

A powerful collection with Johnny Hawk polishing acid-drenched mayhem, blistering electronics, and a penchant for old and new-school flares.
