Fields delivers a sturdy piece of ashen Electronics. The engine built crosses the sounds of Electro and Techno, pistons pummeling and sonorous smoke pouring from Exillon’s exhaust pipes. Robust mechanical sounds with touches of human sentimentality to bridge the divide between armchair and dancefloor.

exillon-mind-techno-controlExillon (aka Jay Fields) is an American electronic artist whose been at the coal face of releasing for over a decade on labels like Ad Noiseam and Detroit Underground. Likewise the San Fran musician is no stranger to Igloo Magazine, having contributed to both Igloo Trax 1 and Igloo Trax 2. But it’s time for a trip to Europe for Mr Fields, being picked up for a vinyl EP by Madrid’s Frigio Records.

Bouncing bass and orbiting synth-lines introduce Mind Techno Control. A decent pace is established from the outset with machine rumbles building into squirming Acid lines. But Exillon keeps a lid on the aggression underpinning the track, unleashing the reptile near the four minute mark. Melodies are forced back upon themselves, darkened vocoders circling, with the ultimate aural assault landing in a rage of Roland rifle fire. “Truval” opens the B-Side. The hostility of “Mind Techno Control” is present, illustrated in the mechanical beats and ruthless bass distortion. But there is something below the surface, something sinister but of a much darker quality. Frightening strings coil around the listener, dragging them below the oily surface into the leaden layers beneath. Exillon finally lets in the light. “Time Shadow” sees the dawn with spiraling chords arching skyward and light claps refreshing the scorched earth. A heady and uplifting run-out.
